Erie County Legislator Backs Human Rights Education

The Buffalo chapter of Youth for Human Rights Human Rights delivered a seminar to youth and concerned community leaders organized by Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant.

On the invitation of Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant and her nonprofit family and community empowerment group, the Buffalo Chapter of Youth for Human Rights International delivered a seminar to introduce youth and community leaders to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Buffalo Youth for Human Rights team, led by Christine Latham and Isabelle Vladoiu, delivered a two-hour seminar on human rights to local youth and community leaders.

The seminar covered the 30 human rights enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Those attending learned the important role these rights play in creating a sane, nonviolent and prosperous community. On completing the training they were awarded basic human rights certificates.

Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant acknowledged the group for attending and for taking a proactive role in society. The training was hosted by We Are Women Warriors, a family and community empowerment group Ms. Grant founded.

Among those attended were members of We Are Women Warriors; the Lifesavers, a youth group of Stop the Violence Coalition; members of the Buffalo Peacemakers; Buffalo Special Police Officers; and other community leaders.

The seminar started with a showing of the award-winning documentary, The Story of Human Rights, which covers the entire history of the human rights from Cyrus the Great in 539 BC to the present.

Participants were shown the 30 one-minute Youth for Human Rights public service announcements to help them grasp the core concepts of each of the 30 Articles of Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Using the Youth for Human Rights Educator’s Guide, the seminar leaders had the group discuss their own examples of the importance of these rights and the consequences of their violation.

All participants were familiarized with the full contents of the YHRI Education Package and how they can use it teach human rights to others.

YHRI Buffalo delivers free training to businesses, groups, and educators and several of those attending arranged seminars for their groups or associates.
